To be able to successfully navigate through ice waters is therefore a skill that needs to be acquired and honed. The ARI Ice navigation module provides just the platform to take on this onerous task. The trainees, both novice and experienced, will benefit tremendously from the extremely niche and specialised training this platform can provide. The module itself is characterised by high fidelity response of pin point accuracy, ‘true to life’ realistic visual scenarios, multifarious operating areas and an intuitive, high calibre man-machine interface.
Using virtual reality, interactive techniques, and multi-media hardware and software, ARI’s Ice Navigation Simulator features realistic presentations of the ice environment, ship movements through ice, accurate modelling of ship ice interaction and outputs for standard on-board equipment. Like all ARI simulators, ARI’s Ice Navigation Simulator is based on sophisticated heuristics, rigorous mathematical models and state-of-the-art visualization engines. The visual rendering makes the whole scenario near life like and very productive tool to get hands on training during these circumstances.
The ARI’s Ice Navigation Simulator incorporates various sea areas and exercises to provide a wholesome range of ice related activities specially in approached to St. Petersberg and Kattegat Channel.
Own ship is modeled on Ice Class I-A Tanker and accurate math modeling replicates ship handling and ice interaction characteristics of Ice Class Ship in various conditions of ice. Ice Navigation simulator developed by ARI addresses the need of training navigators to the various characteristics and vagaries of navigation in that specialized environment. The Ice Navigation Simulator is a tool to teach navigating officers the process of integrating ice information into passage planning and ship navigation in ice covered waters.
Exercises include various realistic scenarios to train navigators in procedures relating to
• Approaching ice edge
• Proceeding along ice edge
• Sailing in Floe ice
• Sailing in Pancake ice
• Sailing in Grease ice
• Sailing in Nilas ice
• Sailing in Young ice
• Proceeding in a ice channel in convoy
• Sailing in channel following ice breaker
• Helicopter Assistance exercises
Captain Rakesh Bhatia, Vice President- Marine Simulation said, “As a company with an envious record in innovation and a much deserved reputation for timely deliveries, ESM/BP put their faith in Applied Research International as a ‘development partner of choice’. And ARI vindicated that faith by developing state of the art Ice Navigation Simulator in record time.”
The ARI’s Ice Navigation Simulator has been appreciated for its range and realistic values by BP Shipping Ice Advisor. Installed at Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies, Mumbai, this simulator is being used in providing Management Level Training to BP Shipping’s officers for sailing on ice class ships in Baltic Areas. This facility is first of its kind in India and among the handful in the world. This facility is culmination of joint efforts of Applied Research International, BP Shipping and Executive Ship Management and will help in extending the expertise of Indian Seafarers in handling specialized ice class ships.
