Applied Research International - the New Delhi (India) based simulation solutions provider - has formulated a unique Liquid Cargo Handling training solution. The Full Mission Liquid and Gas cargo handling simulator was installed and commissioned at Anglo Eastern Ship Management’s Training Center (AEMTC) in Mumbai.
The system which is conceived, designed, developed, manufactured and installed completely indigenously by ARI, combines the latest of digital technology with good old fashioned hands on methods to create a completely holistic ultra tech training environment.
The system incorporates a number of innovative solutions, which have appeared for the first time on the marine simulation horizon. The single installation fulfills the training needs for a large number of tanker model types – the current installation is targeted at 4 models including Oil tanker, LPG Carrier (large), Chemical tanker and LNG Carrier. |

The best of breed touch screen technology is used to emulate the process of physical contact in the man-machine interface. The physical depiction of all ship systems is ultra realistic – both in terms of complexity and appearance. This makes the learning environment extremely immersive. The software is, both by design and implementation, highly intuitive and easy to operate – this is expected to considerably reduce the training time and effort required for instructors.
The system, in its present form, includes a Cargo Control Room with its own operating and monitoring panels and which can be instantly converted into the CCR of any of the ship types installed. Additionally each ship type has its own ‘deck area’ with controls for valves, level indicators, gauges, gas meters, indicators, alarms, key switches, and myriad other controls relevant to that ship type. Further, there are individual trainee stations equipped to perform special duties specific to the currently chosen ship type. All the components are fully integrated into a single system centrally controlled by an Instructor operating from his own specially designed control station.
The system is amazingly flexible in the way it can be configured for use in a multitude of modes – from ‘one on one’ single trainee mode to a large group operating on one or more ships using ‘real’ or simulated controls in any or all combinations of above. Recognizing the fundamental fact that teamwork is the key to successful cargo operations, for the first time ever a system has been created that allows multiple players to participate in a single exercise in a completely seamless role-playing manner.
At the glittering inauguration ceremony at AEMTC Mumbai the MD of ARI Mr. Shravan Rewari said “…we have turned traditional thinking on it’s head – we have create a cutting edge high technology solution which can deliver the best of training environment and systems at an extremely competitive price”.
Capt. Pradeep Chawla – Director Quality Assurance & Training Anglo Eastern Group, who is also the motivating force behind the project, says, “Our faith in ARI’s capabilities has always paid back rich dividends. This installation is arguably the most ambitious project of its type on this planet – even if I say so myself!”
While inaugurating the new installation, Chairman of Anglo Eastern Group Mr. Peter Cremers observed that the investment in new simulation equipment is a reiteration of AESM’s continuous commitment to training its crew, ensuring safe and efficient management of vessels in its fleet. This commitment to training, together with Anglo Eastern’s belief in the need to infuse modern technologies into ship management, has resulted in the establishment of a excellent in-house training infrastructure.
ARI has been one of the key drivers of simulation in India for several years. ARI offers a comprehensive range of world-class simulators that are being widely recognized as “best of breed” incorporating the latest statutory requirements, and creating accurate and immersive environments through which meaningful and result-oriented training can be imparted.
ARI simulators are fully interactive with interlinked parameters and have the ability to accurately reflect the cascading effect of one or more changing parameters through the entire system.
In words of the Mr. Shravan Rewari, Managing Director – ARI, “Our experience over the years has led to the institutionalisation of a strong set of “best practices” which makes our products easy to use and provide optimal training transference. More than any other manufacturer, ARI possesses the ability to customize simulation solutions for specific client needs. We believe this is our key competitive advantage and we invest to ensure that client needs are met in the most specific way possible.”
