Distance Learning - Overview  Education & Learning

Distance Learning Programme (DLP) for structured shipboard training has been developed by Applied Research International as per the guidelines issued by Director General of Shipping. The programme complies with requirement of STCW 78/95 and is approved by Director General of Shipping, India.

The programme of structured shipboard training ensures that the cadets receive systematic practical training and experience in the tasks, duties and responsibilities, which they would be required to undertake as an officer in charge of a navigational watch. DLP also allows deck cadets to interact with our expert faculty while serving onboard ships and it forms a vital link between Pre Sea and post sea education and training. The programme aims at evolution of learning skills through continuous feedback, thorough evaluation and feedback carried out by the institution.

ARI Distance Learning Programmes are available in these formats

1. DLP in association with IGNOU as part of B.Sc. Nautical Sciences
2. ARI DLP for Structured Shipboard Training for deck cadets

DLP in association with IGNOU as part of B.Sc. Nautical Science

ARI DLP (IGNOU) Programme for structured shipboard training consists of 3 semesters each of 6 Months duration i.e; Semester 3, 4 and 5. IGNOU DLP is undertaken after completion of one year contact program i.e.; Semester 1 & 2. The DLP is completed whilst serving at sea and cadets commence their semester on joining their first ship and on starting the learning process.

IGNOU conducts semester end examinations for each of the semester. Examination schedule is quite flexible and students should undertake their examination during their leave periods. Students have the flexibility to appear for all three-semester end exams together or separately.

Cadets are expected to complete 3 semesters of IGNOU DLP within 18 months of sea service. On successful completion and passing of all semesters, Cadets are awarded Advanced Diploma in Nautical Sciences and they are also entitled to remission of 18 months sea time for their second mates competency examinations.

ARI DLP for Structured Shipboard Training for deck cadets
To undertake ARI DLP for structured shipboard training, cadets must meet the entry criteria specified by Director General of Shipping i.e;
  • Passed 10+2 with PCM more than 60% and English more than 50% marks
  • Successfully completed a DGS approved Pre Sea training course for Deck Cadets from any institute

The programme runs over three stages, which are to be completed whilst serving onboard. A cadet is expected to complete three stages of DLP within 24 months of sea services. This programme is essentially practical in nature and consists mainly of tasks to be completed onboard during the training period.

At the end of each stage of DLP, open book tests are carried out. Students have flexibility to undertake these tests onboard under guidance of Master/ Ship Training Officer or at ARI DLP center during their leave period.

The cadets who complete this programme successfully would have acquired the relevant competence and thus would be eligible to appear for certificates of competency as officer in charge of a navigational watch (Second Mate) on completion of 24 months sea service, instead of 36 months sea service required for those who do not undergo/ complete this programme.
