Shipping is the backbone of international trade, carrying almost 90% of the world trade across the globe. Without shipping, the import and export of goods on the scale necessary for the modern world would not be possible. There are around 50,000 merchant ships trading internationally, transporting every kind of cargo. The world fleet is manned by over a million seafarers of virtually every nationality. This makes shipping a truly globalized industry.

India is a large manpower supplier to the international shipping industry and is reputed for providing highly qualified and well trained personnel to work on Indian owned as well as foreign owned merchant ships. Statistics available from the authoritative sources suggest that Indian Officers will continue to be in demand in the foreseeable future.
